This concerted effort is a product of a client's will to live amidst nature and an architect's passionate response to the beauty of a site; an 11 acre property secluded in the wilderness.
The client's fascination with traditional Japanese palaces and their embracing gardens influenced the siting of the different pavilions above and around the existing boulders.
As one moves into the prominent volume devoid of any partition walls, one senses the presence of the post and beam structure. The red cedar timbers are highlighted against the massive white pine beams, each reinforcing their individual regulating grid.
The placement of the main volume attempts to maximize the passive solar energy potential with the foliage screening out most of the direct summer sun. In winter, streams of sunlight can penetrate deeply, creating dramatic shadow patterns with the posts and beams.
